Why an Insulated Garage Door Makes a Difference

A garage door covers a large part of the front of a home. Its finish is easy to notice, but its panel construction affects how the space behind it feels. If you use the garage regularly, store everyday items there or have a room next to it, insulation is worth considering.

What is inside an insulated garage door?

Our insulated steel garage doors use galvanized-steel skins around a polyurethane (PU) foam core. The construction varies by model: the Block Design insulated garage door listing specifies 0.35 mm steel sheeting on both sides and a 40 mm PU foam core. The Velvet garage door with a glass panel specifies 0.5 mm steel sheeting on both sides and PU foam insulation.

The foam core helps slow heat transfer through the door. The insulated construction also helps reduce outside noise that comes through the door. It does not make a garage soundproof or guarantee a particular indoor temperature, but it can make the door a more considered choice for the space behind it.

Benefits you can use every day

• Less heat transfer: the insulated panel reduces the amount of heat passing through the door compared with an uninsulated panel.
• Less outside noise through the door: useful when the garage connects closely to living spaces.
• Galvanized-steel construction: the two metal skins give the panel a durable finished surface on both sides.

A more solid panel for everyday use

The two steel skins and PU core give an insulated panel added strength and rigidity compared with a comparable single-sheet panel. That can mean less flex in everyday use and a reassuringly solid feel when the door opens and closes. The performance of a complete door also depends on its size, hardware and correct installation.

Easy to care for

A factory-finished galvanized-steel door is a practical choice if you want an attractive entrance without a demanding upkeep routine. Unlike many timber finishes, it does not call for regular sanding, staining or varnishing. The door still benefits from occasional cleaning, while tracks, springs and other moving parts should be checked and serviced as recommended.

Our insulated galvanized-steel doors can be suitable for coastal homes. Salt air makes the details of the finish and hardware especially important, so tell us how close your property is to the coast when you enquire. As with any exterior metalwork near the sea, periodically cleaning salt deposits from the door and accessible hardware helps care for the finish.

Does choosing insulation limit the design?

No. The Block Design has a raised rectangular pattern and is listed in black, white, charcoal and walnut. The Velvet model has smooth panels with a dark reflective glass section and is listed in black, grey and brown. Both have single and double size options, so you can choose a finish that suits the house while still getting an insulated panel.

The current listings for these two models include an ET DC Blue Astute motor, a lithium backup battery and two remotes. Installation is arranged and quoted separately, based on the opening and location. Check the individual product page for the exact contents of the option you select.
